Website discourages Christmas gifts
While millions of consumers plan to spend their savings on holiday gifts for friends and family, a website is encouraging people to do just the opposite. BuyNothingChristmas.org, as its name implies, is devoted to discouraging people from spending money on Christmas presents. Originally created by a group of Canadian Mennonites, the site promotes itself as open to anyone and everyone – rich or poor, Christian or not. The site’s creators view the commercialisation of Christmas as a manifestation of the worst aspects of capitalism and hope their movement will be a step away from “North American over-consumption”. The website includes information about the Buy Nothing Christmas campaign, as well as stories, resources and ideas for alternatives to material gift-giving. “This Christmas we’ll be swamped with offers, ads and invitations to buy more stuff”, the website says. “But now there’s a way to say ‘enough!’ and join a movement dedicated to reviving the original meaning of Christmas giving”. Buy Nothing Christmas is one of several online movements dedicated to spending less money in the holiday season. Another website, BuyNothingDay.org, promotes a similar agenda, as does the Buy Nothing Christmas Facebook group, which has more than 1,700 followers. Read more
